Renantis inaugurates Carrecastro Wind Farm, Spain
Madrid, March 31, 2023 – Renantis has inaugurated Carrecastro Wind Farm, in the municipalities of Tordesillas and Velilla in Spain. With an installed capacity of 10 MW, Carrecastro generates around 34 GWh/year, through four wind turbines, and supplies the equivalent consumption of approximately 13,000 homes.
The Global Head of Business Development and M&A of Renantis, Carmelo Scalone, pointed out during the inauguration that: “the residents of Tordesillas and Velilla are the best example of what can be achieved together when combining communities with renewables. Not only has the local population been committed to renewable projects in their municipality from the very beginning, but they have also proactively supported our project and, as a result, today we can say that Carrecastro is – within and outside Renantis – a prototype, a symbol and a precedent of how to collaborate in the best possible way in our sector”.
The construction of the wind farm resulted in an important archaeological find which sparked intervention work to document the large Bronze Age site that lay hidden underneath the ground on the site. The Cogotas I culture is one of the most emblematic sites of the final period of this cultural group, which spread across the central Spanish plateau between 1,600 and 1,100 BC. The archaeological excavation work was carried out over an area of 2,816 m², making the intervention one of the most extensive carried out on a site of these characteristics.
During the inauguration the archaeological team stated that, under the direction of professor Germán Delibes de Castro of the University of Valladolid and coordinated by the archaeologists in charge of the excavation, Ángel Palomino and Manuel Crespo -Patrimonio Global-, data from the findings during the excavation will be published later this year.
The mayor of Tordesillas, Miguel Ángel Oliveira, closed the event by stating that: “Renewable energy, in this case wind energy, is the energy of the future because it is obtained from natural sources characterised by being inexhaustible, non-polluting and contributing to the reduction of the use of fossil fuels, the main cause of the greenhouse effect. Companies that build and operate wind power plants, as Renantis does, can bring benefits that enhance the regions where they are installed, with social, educational, sports and cultural activities that help to improve the quality of life of the communities and their inhabitants”.
Carrecastro wind farm has been operational since February 2020, but could not be officially inaugurated because of Covid-19 restrictions.
Renantis has three operational renewable energy plants in Spain. These comprise two wind power plants – the Carrecastro Wind Farm inaugurated today and the Cabezo San Roque Wind Farm (Muel, Zaragoza), in operation since 2007 – and the Desafío Solar Photovoltaic Plant (Escatrón, Zaragoza). It also owns a 26% stake in La Muela wind farm complex (Zaragoza).
This represents a total of 109 MW operating in the country. Renantis’ wind and solar development portfolio in Spain totals approximately 1 GW, and all projects have been granted access and connection to the grid.
